About Us

Who We Are

We are the People for Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.). P.A.W.S. is a volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation located in Greene County, Iowa. Our purpose is to ensure humane treatment of Greene County animals by providing humane education, responding to neglect/abuse calls, and providing a low income spay/neuter program for Greene County residents. We also care for the animals at the Greene County Animal Shelter, which is a small shelter for lost and abandoned animals. We strive to find loving, permanent homes for these animals through our adoption program.

Adopting a friend

Adoption fees for animals adopted from the shelter are $75 for a cat and $100 for a dog. This fee includes spay/neuter, shots, and microchip. If an animal is too young to be altered at the time of adoption, either the animal may have the surgery done through PAWS at our veterinarian when of age, or the adopter may choose a different veterinarian, but must furnish proof of altering. If the adopter chooses to use their own vet, they will be refunded a portion of the adoption fee. All animals adopted from the facility are subject to spaying/neutering in accordance with Iowa law.    We do not have "regular" hours.   If you would like to meet the animals, please contact us at 515-386-9814 and we will schedule a mutually convenient time for you to come and see them.

Donating and Volunteering

The shelter can always use donations of paper towels, cleaning supplies, dog and cat toys, dog collars, blankets, Frontline for dogs/cats, new or used cat furniture, cat beds, treats, and new or used doghouses to pass on to dogs in need in the community. Volunteers are always needed to do evening chores at the shelter.

Come Visit Us!

PAWS is located on West Russell Street in Jefferson, next to the wastewater treatment plant. From Highway 4, take Russell Street west at the stoplight, go past the swimming pool, and start down the hill. Once you see the waste water treatment plant, turn into their parking lot. The facility is the building on the southeast side of the parking lot.   Please contact us at 515-386-9814 if you would like to schedule an appointment to meet the animals.

PAWS Volunteers -
